Backroad Radio – May 20th, 2013

Toronto’s MC J Shiltz stopped by the show to kick it with us and speak very candidly about his latest album, Still Standing. Sharing stories of how the record game together, his thoughts on the process of collaborating with artists and the stigma of making “boom bap hip hop”. We played a couple cuts from the record and he also gave us them Backroad Bars as well.

Every now and then we have to remind you that it really is bigger than hip hop over here on Backroad and we go much deeper than just that. We dug in the crates heavy for throwback this week as Big Jacks played a set of some original joints that have been sampled throughout hip hop history. (As if we really needed a reason to do a De La spotlight!) Love him or hate him, you can’t deny the dent Lil’ Wayne has put in the hip hop world. This week on Backroad, Royale provided a Weezy Tribute set to commemorate the release of his new album “I Am Not A Human Being 2″. We also touched on the controversial from lyrics Wayne & Ross on their latest verses, shouts to Emit Till. Even with only 50% of the crew, we still gave you 100% of the Backroad bangers you love. We premiered the new joint from Schoolboy Q called “Yay Yay”, produced by Toronto’s own Boi1da. Shouts to Bozack Morris who set the show off with tons of “newness”. Backroad Radio – Mar 25th, 2013

It’s officially been 10 years now since Cam’ron introduced the world to his Harlem crew The Diplomats aka Dipset via the classic double album, Diplomatic Immunity. What would follow would be one of the biggest movements to hit hip hop in the early 2000s. Love em or hate em you can’t deny their impact and influence when they were in their prime as a unit. To celebrate we put together a set of classic joints from the Dips courtesy of Royale. Cam, Julez, Jim and the rest all get shine with their solo bangers and crew records in a set that any true fan will appreciate. Ay!

The CBC caused quite a stir in the Canadian hip hop community last week with the release of their “top 25 greatest Canadian rappers ever” list. Needless to say no one has been pleased with it and we broke down our opinions as to why everyone is upset as well as add our own thoughts about it. Peep the discussion and let us know you think. We probably made you mad too with our opinions, haha!

Up and coming Toronto rap duo The Knobodies stopped by to premier their newest record to the world and hit us with them Backroad Bars.
