Mixtape Massacre – The Final Episode

February 7, 2011

Saturday Feb 5th, 2011 might have marked the end of an era here in Toronto as The Mixtape Massacre broadcasted on CKLN 88.1’s airwaves for what could be the last time due to the CRTC decision to revoke the station’s license after serving as a voice for the community for nearly 30 years.

We opened the doors and invited our friends, fam and fans to celebrate all the good times with us and showcase the rich history and talent that exists in our city. Tons of special guests passed through/called in to the show from Ron Nelson, DJX, Real Frequency, K-Os, Citizen Kane and many more. We also opened the mics for a live cipher featuring some of TO’s finest such as: Tona, Rich Kidd, Adam Bomb, Thrust, 4th Pyramid, Smash Brovas, and High Def.

I’d like to take a second to say thank you to YOU if you ever took the time to tune into The Mixtape Massacre, whether you loved us or hated us. I’m not going to go on and on here about what the entire journey and experience meant to me but we’d love to hear from you. Feel free to comment and share your fondest memories of saturday afternoons on 88.1 (from Fantastic Voyage thru to Mixtape Massacre) and CKLN on the whole as a station.

For more information on what you can do to help keep CKLN 88.1 on air and to sign the petition visit CKLN

Differently Still Guy #42: Top 25 Hip Hop Albums of the decade! ft. Big Jacks & Agile!

December 23, 2009

Biiiig up to our Real Frequency Fam (Inzane, Arcee, Pplus, Keezy, Stacey) for years they’ve been a pillar in Toronto’s hip hop community. Each week the Freqs have provided us with “heatery” on the air waves from their college radio days to their current position on commercial radio at Flow 93.5. About a year ago they started a podcast on their blog by the name of “Differently Still Guy” where everything from nerdy hip hop randomness to fine cuisine has been discussed. I’ve been a huge fan of DSG so when they invited me on the podcast to discuss the top hip hop records of the past decade I was geeked to say the least. Check what they had to say…

As we wrap up 2009, we take a look back at the decade’s best albums. Now this being Hip Hop there is no way you can make a list with out a ‘discussion’, so we brought along Big Jacks (Grand Groove Dj’s, Black Rap) and the homie DJ Agile (Brassmunk, Big Black Lincoln) to add their views and take a look at a decade we thought was weak?

Peep the discussion and join in!

I’m excited to announce that our homepage is finally back up and popping so go stop by, check it out and keep checking it for tons of exclusive material and goodies!

Royale’s Big Philly’s random CD buys: Eminem – Relapse

May 28, 2009

Eminem – Relapse (2009)

Guest Shopper: Big Philly | Sole Purpose |

Where :Wal-Mart 50 Quarry Edge Brampton, ON

How Much: $9.93 (But, the sticker was tagged at $12.74 Yea, I don’t know, but I didn’t complain!)

Why : Cuz “I’m Eminem! And you’re a fag in a Womens gym!” Nah, because 50’s favourite white boy is back!

Standout joints: “3 A.M.”, “My Mom”, “Insane”, “Same Song & Dance”, “Medicine Ball”, “Crack a Bottle” & “Underground”
Sit down Joints: The only song I’m not really feeling is “We Made You”, you know when you hear a good song too much? Chalk this one up to oversaturation!

Rating: 9/10

Conclusion : After taking a 4 year hiatus, Mr. Mathers is back with a more mature (Yes, more mature) sound, more polished flow (Yes, believe it or not he has improved his already untouchable flow) and his best produced work to date (Thanks Dre) After recently admitting he has not recorded a song sober in over 7 years, “Relapse” is truly an artistic album that captures real emotions from a genuine individual. The album is a lot more introspective than the last few releases and exposes a more human side of Eminem, one that faces real problems like everyone else. If you want to hear new Hip Hop that doesn’t require learning some weird dance off of YouTube, then pick this up!

Royale’s random CD buys: Cam’Ron – Crime Pays

May 20, 2009

Device MemoryhomeuserpicturesIMG00174-20090520-1622
Cam’Ron -Crime Pays (2009)

Where : HMV Trinity Commons Mall Brampton, ON

How Much: 14.99

Why : Seriously!?

Standout joints: “Cookin Up”, “Curve”, “Get it In Ohio”, “Got it For Cheap” & “Who”
Sit down Joints: “You Know What’s Up”, “Get it Get it”

Rating: 7.5/10

Conclusion : As much as i would love a Dipset reunion, in terms of music, Cam definitely does not need them. In my opinion a strong album. You can see this as an “alright” album or a really good mixtape. Cam fans, Dipset fans will not be disappointed…and i am pretty sure this album did better than “Pray for Reign”

P.S – I gave up on getting Summer Jam Tix, I doubt the reunion will happen.
